Happy Holidays! Adieu the the 00s!

After Thanksgiving Downward Dog Workshop at Village Green Yoga in Issaquah

It might be a sign of pumpkin pie overdose when I’ve sat here for the last I-don’t-want-to-confess how long to think of a witty title for my upcoming yoga workshop. “Two Days Later, a Tale of a Downward Turkey” a la 28 Days Later, or “After the Turkey Party is the Downdog Party” with a nod to R. Kelly? Something dorky like, “L-tryptophan Blues from Turkey Day? We’ve Got the Dog to Chase it Away!” Or, something more conventionally yoga, like, “Get Grace after You Give Grace, Giving Thanks to Your Body after Thanksgiving.”

You can see how convoluted and silly this can get, fast.

So, I’ll just get to the point. This Saturday November 28th from 9:30 – 11:30am, come to Village Green Yoga for a fabulously fun yoga workshop with me. The main focus will be on Downward Facing Dog, or Adho Mukha Svanasana in Sanskrit, so chosen because it’s a quintessential pose stretching the body from head to toes, and it can be done in a few short minutes to relief some of that infamous chaos and stress that the holidays season can bring.

In this 2-hour workshop, we will go over ways to wag joyfully in Downward Dog , including:

+ Major challenges such as tight hamstrings, overly mobile spine, and hyperextended arms
+ Common pitfalls such as dumping our weight on the shoulder and wrist joints
+ Strategies for protecting the hands to avoid wrist pain and injury
+ Modifications for safety and relaxation
+ How to build *both* strength and flexibility in the shoulders
+ Moving in and out of Downward Dog in Vinyasa

The class is appropriate for both brand new beginners to yoga as well as seasoned practitioners.

Downward Dog, however, is not recommended for pregnant women in their 2nd and 3rd trimester, or for people with unmedicated high blood pressure, detached retina, weak eye capillaries, glaucoma, conjunctivitis or any infection of inflammation of the eyes or ears.

In keeping with the tradition of Black Friday, this 2-hour workshop is priced at a nice $10.

And now for some good ol’ Dog ‘n Cat chasin’ Turkey, not to mention some childhood nostalgia, I present: Pluto in Cold Turkey

Seattle Yoga News – Studio Openings is the New Black

Hollywood has movie premieres, Seattle has yoga studio openings.

  • This weekend, Be Luminous in South Lake Union is holding their Opening Celebration on Saturday November 21st, from 5-9 pm.
  • 8 Limbs Yoga Phinney Ridge is running behind schedule, and instead of opening this weekend as planned, they’re opening on Thanksgiving Day, and the partay is held on Friday, December 4th, 4-8:15pm.
  • Breathe Hot Yoga is also planning an Opening Party sometime on the weekend of December 4th-6th.

And, fresh off of the rumor mill, exclusive to yours only, yet another space for yoga is being planned in the South Lake Union area.

So far, no savvy couture designer has stepped up to offer a new outfit for each occasion, but it might be only a matter of time, since we *do* have a studio named Haute Yoga in the Queen Anne neighborhood. How soon until we have yoga paparazzi?

Seattle Yoga News – Donald Moyer at Two Dog Yoga

As a relatively young yoga practitioner (27), I’m always seeking the wisdom of those that have come before me, like, waaay before me. I’m always asking, who are the teachers’ teachers? The teachers’ teachers’ teachers? I’m not saying that I can’t, or won’t, learn from my contemporaries and other teachers. I know that I have much to learn, and do learn from all teachers of all experience levels.

A reason why I focus on studying with the pioneers, apart from the fact that they’re, well, pioneers, is time. These older teachers could stop teaching any day now, and as far as I’m concerned, that day will come too soon for me. For some of those teachers, like Vanda Scaravelli, it’s already too late. Greedily, I want them to stay around until I’ve learned everything from all of them, a pipe dream, of course.

So, when I found out about Donald Moyer, and that he’d be doing a workshop in Seattle at Two Dog Yoga, I was ecstatic.

Don is the Founding Director of the famed Yoga Room in Berkeley. I got a hold of his book, Yoga, Awakening the Inner Body, and page after page, discovered a thrilling exploration of the human body, as if I’m hunting and uncovering treasures. My jaw practically dropped to the floor when I read about the comparison of sternum to the sacrum.

The xiphoid process is like the tail of the sternum, just like the coccyx is the tail of the sacrum. Any movement of the xiphoid process directly affects the tone and quality of the respiratory diaphragm, just as the coccyx affects the pelvic diaphragm.

The sacrum is a vital center of communication linking the legs, pelvis, and lumbar spine. If your sacrum is tilted to the right or left, or if your sacrum is too deep or too near the surface of the body, then your hip joints, sacroilliac joints, and lumbar spine will be more vulnerable to injury.

In a similar way, the manubrium, or upper sternum, is the center of communication, or control panel, for the arms, shoulder girdle, and rib cage. If your manubrium is tilted to the right or left, or if your manubrium is too deep or too prominent, your shoulder girdle, shoulder joints, and ultimately, your cervical spine will be adversely affected.

Did you guys catch that? He compared the manubrium to the control panel! The control panel! Okay, okay, maybe it is not that exciting. Maybe I got a little too overzealous there. The point is, I’ve truly appreciated reading his book, and I’m really looking forward to meeting him this weekend.

Here’s information from the Two Dog Yoga website:

November 13 6:00pm – 8:00pm
November 14 9:30am – 12:30pm & 3:00pm – 5:00pm
November 15 9:30am – 12:30pm

Donald Moyer is the founder of The Yoga Room, in Berkeley, CA. Donald’s teaching style is quiet but intense. He encourages an awareness of the inner body by working with the alignment of internal organs, creating space in the joints, and maintaining the balance between release and intention. Practicing in this way creates more movement with less effort, and brings a deeper, more self-empowering experience to the poses. Six month’s experience yoga required.

Seattle Yoga News – New Studio in South Lake Union

Seattle, are ya ready for more yoga? Well, are ya? (Hello there, inner Clint Eastwood).

This town may lack many things: better public transit, drivers who can merge to and from the freeway, and snow plows. What we do not lack, however, are coffee shops, “pleasure boats“, and–as I stated in my Yoga for Geeks post–yoga studios.

A new studio named Be Luminous, co-owned by Michel Eubank Spruance and Scott Francis, is slated to open at the end of 2009 in the Whole Foods complex on Westlake Ave in South Lake Union. (I’m guessing “SLUY – South Lake Union Yoga” and “SLUW – South Lake Union Wellness” were rejected in early rounds of brainstorming, eliminating any chances of someone saying “I’m taking the SLUT to the SLUW”.)

From the press release [pdf] from Vulcan Inc. (the company that owns the space):

Co-owned by Michel Eubank Spruance and Scott Francis, Be Luminous Yoga will offer Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga classes, which is a dynamic method of yoga that combines education, intuition and knowledge. This style is becoming one of the fastest growing forms of yoga in the world. The studio will also offer introductory yoga classes, classes for children and seniors, restorative yoga classes, workshops and more. This is the first yoga studio opened by Michel Eubank Spruance and Scott Francis but both have been teaching yoga for more than five years.

Be Luminous Yoga will begin its early morning classes at 6:15 a.m. with the last classes ending at 9:00 p.m. A minimum of five classes will be offered each day including noon classes for a lunchtime workout. Be Luminous Yoga members can join as a member with a monthly unlimited pass, a three month unlimited pass or an annual unlimited pass. Drop-in rates will also be available for individual classes.

“We plan to offer fun events and workshops including yoga events with live music, hip hop with yoga classes, a yoga run group and a yoga retreat in Costa Rica next year,” said Scott Francis, co-owner of Be Luminous Yoga. “Supporting the local community is also a main area of focus, and we hope to sponsor a local nonprofit organization every month.”

The studio will include a full tea area for guests to relax and mingle, men’s and women’s locker rooms with showers, as well as a small shopping boutique area with gifts, jewelry, yoga apparel, yoga props and mats, meditation props, and more. Store hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

It sure is gettin' hot in hurr (oh yes, pun fully intended, since there are LOTS of Baptiste yoga in Seattle, and it's done in a hot room)

Seattle Yoga News – Theft at Seattle Hot Yoga Studios

Seattle is getting colder, gloomier by the hour, and the rain has come back to resume its throne. In addition to pumpkin-spiced lattes by the fire and hibernating, a warm or even hot yoga studio sounds incredibly enticing to a lot of us, like a cat being drawn to a pile of warm laundry.

It’s perhaps recognizing this trend that a couple thieves are making their rounds to Seattle hot yoga studios, where people trustingly leave their personal belongings out in the open. I’ve been told that the guy (and it’s been males so far) would complain of dizziness and not feeling well, totally common in hot yoga, and leave the room.

Once outside, while the unsuspecting students are working on their Japanese ham sandwich or English bulldog determination, the thief is free to roam through unattended purses and wallets in the lobby or changing rooms.

The silver lining in this is a lot of studio owners are calling and alerting each other, and descriptions of the thieves are being shared, so I believe studios are taking measures to prevent any further incidents. Forewarned is forearmed, and consider yourself forewarned if your belongings are out of sight at your yoga studio, hot or not.

Seattle Yoga News – Less Bikram, More Studios

Rain City Yoga in the U-District has eliminated all Bikram yoga classes from their schedule, and the owners, Amber Tande and Colin Patterson are planning on opening Sutra Yoga and Wellness Center in Wallingford, next to their vegetarian restaurant Sutra on 45th street. The plan is to open by November 1st, 2009.

YogaLife owner Michael Suzerris is remodeling an arched-roof building on N Pacific Street near Gasworks Park to create the Om Culture for yoga, drum and dance events. Classes are starting on September 28th, 2009.

Anne Phyfe Palmer is expanding 8 Limbs Yoga to its fourth location in Phinney Ridge, on 68th and Greenwood. The studio is set to open in late fall 2009, and will have “a full schedule of classes in two studios, limited childcare, a small Boutique, cork floors, and more”, according to the web site.

It looks like we may be Bikram’ed out, but there is still plenty of yoga to go around, especially in the 98103 zip code.

Studio Profile: Motion and Rest

Yesterday I met with Pearl Thornton, the proprietor of Motion and Rest, it is a gorgeous space for movement and therapy right in downtown Ballard. I am definitely going to hold some workshops there, such as Yoga for Soccer Players, and Yoga for Climbers.

In the meantime, if you are in the area, pop in and check out the dance and qi quong classes there, alongside with accupuncture massage services. If you are looking for a space to do any body therapy work, give Pearl a call at 206-999-7909.
